Does GEO Need a Special AI File? What Google Actually Says

Published 15 January 2026 · by Manoj Kumar

A common claim making the rounds is that a special file — often called llms.txt — or a unique schema type will get your site included in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google's own developer documentation directly addresses this: there is no such special file or schema requirement.

What actually drives AI search visibility is the same foundation that's always driven good search performance: crawlable, well-structured HTML; clear entity information about who you are; genuinely useful content that goes beyond commodity information; structured data that removes ambiguity; strong internal linking; and demonstrated expertise, experience, authoritativeness and trust.

If you're being sold a 'GEO hack' that sounds like a shortcut around that foundation, it's worth being skeptical. The businesses actually showing up in AI-generated answers are, almost without exception, the ones doing the fundamentals well.
